E17's Tony Set For Comeback « Result #1 on May 18, 2009, 10:06am »
E17's Tony Set For Comeback 18th May 2009 - The Sun TONY MORTIMER masterminded one of the biggest bands in the nineties - now, belatedly, he’s about to go it alone. The Steam hitmaker has a comeback gig in London later this month, 12 years after his last record with EAST 17. A successful solo career was predicted for him after he left the band – but that was the last thing Tony had on his mind. “I locked myself away and did lots of drugs and drank alcohol,” he explained. “I didn’t want to go out in public – I just wanted to stay behind my front gates and drink and be happy. “I used to wait for the clock to hit midday and really struggled - I just wanted a drink. “I was really depressed – devastated with what went on in the third album.” Up All Night was marred with infighting after the band’s other members BRIAN HARVEY, JON HENDY and TERRY COLWELL joined in with writing duties. However, they were not keen on involving Tony in the tracks they penned and he left the band shortly after its release. “I never got over that,” he admitted. “I think they wanted to prove themselves as songwriters without me. They didn’t want me in the band.” The break-up of the group which notched 12 Top Ten hits, including Christmas No 1 Stay Another Day which earned Tony an Ivor Novello Award, hit him hard especially after the others continued without him under the name E-17. “I had my family and two girls and that got me through it and ensured I didn’t go right over the edge in terms of suicide,” Tony revealed. “My brother did it and I didn’t want to copy him.” After coming through those tough times, Tony, who's been teetotal for six years, wanted to get back into the public eye and hoped it would be through appearing on reality TV. However, he failed to even gain a place on Celebrity Big Brother. Tony said: “I met with the producers and I was put on standby. “I would have liked to go on there because I like a bit of psychology. Trouble is I’m too polite and easy going so I wouldn’t have made good telly.” The 38-year-old now admits it would have been career suicide appearing on the show and is instead using his writing talents in a bid to match the heights of East 17's nineties heyday when they battled it out in the charts with TAKE THAT. However, Tony believes their boyband rivals owed a lot of their success to East 17. He says Take That only got big once they started dressing like them. “We turned up at a Radio 1 Roadshow and we were in fits of laughter because they were wearing it all wrong. “And then they had loads of success and we were like – ‘b*****ds!’" After a failed comeback bid in 2006 that featured in a Channel Four documentary, Tony says it's "very unlikely" the band will ever reform as a foursome. He's putting all his efforts into his solo career which kicks off with an intimate gig at London's 229 Club. Tony will be performing mainly East 17 classics plus a couple of new solo tracks. However, Tony admits he won’t be wearing any trademark East 17 gear - unlike his old bandmates whom he says are “still in 1994”. “I’d wear a cloth cap now as opposed to a baseball cap." Tony Mortimer's comeback gig takes place on Thursday, May 28 at Club 229
